My Way of Working

.

My approach to my work is based fundamentally on the principle that no one is an expert on living. When we work with a therapist, counsellor or coach, we work with someone we can relate to, who we can connect with, and who we can learn to trust. This, more than any particular approach, technique or ethos, has been recognised, time and again, to be the most important aspect of psychotherapy and counselling. In choosing a therapist therefore, it is imperative that clients ‘shop around’, and find someone that they can feel comfortable with.

.

Therapy or counselling is essentially two people engaging in a conversation and a space for reflection. When we engage in a therapeutic conversation about our dilemmas and challenges, we allow ourselves the freedom to talk about what is important to us, what is both meaningful, even joyful, or equally, what is uncomfortable or shameful to talk about. We can have the permission to present aspects of ourselves that are usually judged, ostracised, or even disowned, both by ourselves and by others. In the process of such dialogue, our assumptions about ourselves and others might be re-examined, challenged, or clarified such that our ways of coping can be both understood better and a more meaningful and satisfying way of living explored.
